About Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth - also known as our third molars - are part of our natural set of teeth. They are also the last teeth to develop in your jaws.

While a fully developed wisdom tooth can contribute to the effectiveness of our chewing, more often than not, there is not enough space in our jaws for them to erupt into the correct position. As such, wisdom teeth usually need to be treated / extracted depending on their position in your jaws.

Here are some common problems associated with wisdom teeth:

  1. Pain caused by swelling or infection to the gum covering the wisdom tooth (pericoronitis).

  2. Tooth decay.

  3. Food getting stuck around the wisdom tooth.

What Happen When My Wisdom Teeth Start Causing Trouble?

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort caused by your wisdom teeth, you should schedule a dental appointment immediately.

During check up, the dentist might take an X-ray to see the positions of your wisdom teeth and provide a professional risk assessment.

If the tooth is in a position where there is a low risk of a problem developing, you can choose to leave it alone.

However, in cases where a problem has developed, the wisdom tooth could be removed completely via extraction or surgery, depending on the position & angulation of the tooth.

Treatment Cost & Payment Plan

The price for wisdom teeth treatment ranges from $300 to $1500, depending on the severity of the case and the treatment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it be painful after the wisdom teeth removal procedure?

It is likely that there will be some discomfort and swelling both on the inside and outside of your mouth after wisdom tooth surgery.

This is usually at its worst for the first three days, and it may take up to two weeks before all the soreness disappears.

You may also find that your jaw is stiff and may not be able to open fully. There may also be some bruising of the skin of your face that can take up to 2 weeks to fade away.

To assist with this, our dentists will often prescribe medication after the surgery to minimise the post-surgery pain and swelling.

What type of anaesthetic is used?

  1. Local anaesthetic - this is an injection into gum surrounding the wisdom tooth, rather similar to that you may have had for a filling. The injection takes a couple of minutes to numb the area and means that you will feel no pain while the wisdom tooth is removed.

  2. Intravenous sedation – in addition to a local anaesthetic injection, you can be given an injection into your arm. This makes you feel relaxed and less aware of the procedure. You are awake but patients frequently have little or no memory of the operation.

What should I do after the surgery?

It is important to keep the extraction sites as clean as possible for the first few weeks after surgery.

As it may be difficult to clean your teeth around the sites of extraction because of the soreness, you should try your best to keep the area free from food debris by gently rinsing with a mouthwash or warm salt water.

Additionally, take painkillers as prescribed by your dentist. Make sure to complete your entire antibiotic course as outlined by your dentist, even if you start to feel better before the course is done.

Any substances I need to avoid after the surgery?

You should not consume alcohol or tobacco within the first week of the surgery.

Additionally, you should avoid using straw as the pressure might dislodge blood clots in your jaw’s sockets.

Finally, you should refrain from any physical activity for the first 48 hours following your wisdom teeth removal.
